Special transport and heavy haulage across Europe

Heavy haulage and oversized cargo transport across Europe means moving indivisible loads outside standard dimensions and weights — and it needs expert planning, the right heavy haulage fleet and abnormal load permits in every transit country. ZGT has organised special transport and heavy haulage from Zagreb across Croatia and the whole EU since 1996: route surveys, bridge and tunnel clearance checks, cross-border permits, police and escort vehicles, and safe delivery of loads up to 100 tonnes. We cover the main European corridors from Croatia to Germany, Italy, Austria, Benelux and the Western Balkans, handling lowbed trailers, telescopic trailers, modular platforms and multi-axle combinations. Tell us the dimensions, weight and route and you get a written quote within 24 hours.

When is cargo considered oversized?

Cargo needs a special transport permit when the loaded vehicle exceeds one or more of the limits set by Croatian and EU road regulations:

  • Length over 16.50 m (tractor with semi-trailer) or 18.75 m (truck with trailer)
  • Width over 2.55 m (2.60 m for refrigerated vehicles)
  • Height over 4.00 m
  • Total weight over 40 t (44 t for intermodal transport)
  • Axle load higher than allowed for the road category

Types of oversized cargo we transport

Our fleet and team are adapted to a wide range of indivisible loads:

Industrial machinery and production lines
Energy equipment — transformers, turbines, reactors
Construction structures, bridges and silos
Agricultural machinery and implements
Military and special vehicles
Large steel structures

How we organize the transport

  1. 01

    Data collection and feasibility check.

Cargo dimensions, weight, centre of gravity, lifting points, axle load distribution, and loading/unloading site access. Photos and CAD drawings help us run the first feasibility check in hours.

  2. 02

    Engineering route analysis.

We simulate clearance along the whole corridor: bridges, tunnels, roundabouts, sharp bends, inclines, road width, and axle-load restrictions. Civil engineering checks are coordinated where public structures need approval.

  3. 03

    Vehicle and trailer selection.

Lowbed, telescopic, modular platform or multi-axle self-propelled unit depending on cargo dimensions, weight and route constraints.

  4. 04

    Permit procurement and coordination.

Applications to Hrvatske ceste, Hrvatske autoceste, police, and every transit country. Validity windows, curfews and escort rules are aligned across the whole route.

  5. 05

    Execution and real-time monitoring.

GPS tracking, pilot cars, technical escort, and 24/7 client coordination until the cargo is safely unloaded.

Trailer types we use

Trailer choice depends on dimensions, weight and shape of the cargo:

Lowbed semi-trailer.

Standard choice for machinery and industrial equipment up to 45 t. Loading deck height down to approx. 40 cm helps keep total height within permit limits.

Telescopic trailer.

Extends up to 21 m and more to match cargo length — ideal for long girders, poles, bridge beams and ship sections.

Modular platform.

Configurable axle lines (4, 6, 8 or more) and hydraulic suspension for loads above 60 t and exceptionally wide or high cargo. Can be coupled longitudinally or side-by-side.

Lowbed trailer with ramps / hydraulic steering.

Allows loading from a low platform without crane lifting; hydraulic steering improves manoeuvrability on tight sites and roundabouts.

Fleet technical specifications

Indicative limits per trailer type. The final combination is defined after the route survey and a review of the cargo specification.

European corridors and coverage

We run heavy haulage and oversized transport to and from Croatia across Europe. Indicative permit lead times per corridor help you plan project schedules:

CorridorTransit countriesPermit lead time (indicative)Notes
Croatia – GermanySI, AT (or HU, AT)2–4 weeksNight moves and escort above 3.5 m width
Croatia – ItalySI, IT2–3 weeksFerry option for exceptionally wide loads
Croatia – AustriaSI, AT1–3 weeksRoute survey for tunnels and bridges
Croatia – BeneluxSI, AT, DE3–5 weeksSeveral national permits to synchronise
Croatia – Western BalkansBA, RS, ME, MK1–3 weeksCustoms clearance and border formalities included

Lead times are indicative, based on ongoing projects, and depend on dimensions, weight and authority workload. Binding scheduling follows the route survey. We also coordinate ferry links (Adriatic ports to Italy, Slovenia and Greece), tunnel and bridge clearances, and curfew windows that many countries apply to oversized night moves.

Industries we serve

Typical special transport assignments by industry:

Power and energy.

Transformers, turbine and wind-farm components, boilers and pressure vessels moved to and from project sites.

Construction.

Excavators, cranes, concrete plants, precast concrete and structural steel elements.

Manufacturing and plant engineering.

Production line relocations, presses, machine tools and complete process units.

Agriculture.

Tractors, combines, sprayers and implements moved across Europe without dismantling.

Permits and escort

Every special transport in Croatia requires a permit from Hrvatske ceste (HC) or Hrvatske autoceste (HAC), and a police or technical escort once the load exceeds certain dimensions. For international oversized transport we coordinate permits for every transit country — Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and the Benelux — align the validity windows, and plan night-time or convoy movements where local rules require them, so the cargo moves without delays at the border.

Frequently asked questions

What is oversized cargo?

Oversized cargo is cargo that, together with the vehicle, exceeds one or more legal dimensions: length 16.50 m (semi-trailer) or 18.75 m (truck with trailer), width 2.55 m, height 4.00 m or total weight 40 t. An exceptional transport permit is required.

How much does special transport of oversized cargo cost?

The price depends on cargo dimensions and weight, route length, the number of countries crossed, permit and escort requirements, and trailer type. Each quote is prepared individually after a route analysis and a review of the cargo specifications and drawings.

How long does it take to obtain an exceptional transport permit?

For Croatia, permits are usually issued within 3–7 working days. For international transport, permits must be coordinated for each transit country, which can take 1–4 weeks depending on the route.

What types of oversized cargo do you transport?

We transport industrial machinery, energy equipment, construction structures, ship sections, bridges, reactors, transformers and other indivisible loads that exceed standard dimensions.

Which countries do you cover with special transport?

We run oversized and heavy transport from Croatia to and from all EU markets, with the most frequent corridors towards Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and the Benelux countries, plus the Western Balkans.

What information do you need for a special transport quote?

Send the cargo dimensions (length, width, height), weight, centre of gravity, lifting or loading points, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, and the desired time window. Drawings or photos speed up the route feasibility check considerably.
